Have you ever noticed that the times we need Emotional Tools the most is often the times we forget to use them. There has never been a better time to dig in and make your emotional well-being a priority!</p> <p>So let’s talk strategy. At this point there are 16 tools in the Awakening to Your Story Emotional Tool Library with more coming next season. I wanted to make this as easy for you as I could so I created 4 categories that you can easily pick and choose from. After all that is where the 12 inches will take us. When we think of our heart we think about it as a muscle that pumps blood through out the body. But did you know that it directs and aligns many systems in your body so that they can function in harmony with each other?</p> <p>Your physical heart communicates with your brain and body <em>neurologically</em> with nerve impulses, <em>biochemically</em> with hormones and neurotransmitters, <em>biophysically </em>with pressure waves, and <em>energetically</em> with its electromagnetic field.</p> <p>According to research studies at the Heart Math Institute your heart intelligence is an organized central intelligence that is a high-speed intuitive source of wisdom and clear perception. What does that mean? It means that your heartbeats are not just mechanical pumps moving blood, but rather an intelligent language that influences how you perceive and interact with the world around you. Making sure your heart is in a state of coherence; where all of these heart factors are at neutral and balanced allows you to create a biological, physical and emotional stability for yourself. Their brain and heart are misaligned and often this misalignment or incoherence creates a feeling of frustration. There have been so many times I have gotten into conversations with clients and friends where when all the details are boiled down, what we are talking about is worth, value and enoughness. It could be in regards to their dating life, job experiences, friendships, partnership, parenting, or even the over all feeling about their day-to-day life.</p> <p>When asked they say, I know I am enough, worth it, a great catch, a good parent, a good friend, deserving of it, or deserving of better. I know I am… you fill in the blank. I am worthy of that thing… you fill in the blank.</p> <p>When it’s brought up in conversation you say how much you know X, Y or Z but then the problem is you don’t feel it. Then you talk about all of the scenarios in your life where you validate and focus on the suffering. Highlighting where you feel less than, where people treat you poorly, where the dynamic plays out in negative ways that contradict this truth about yourself that you say you know.</p> <p>This is the place of misalignment, incoherence, contrast or resistance.</p> <p>Your brain says that positive thing (like I am enough) but your life and feelings just don’t match up. You can feel it; remember often this miss-matched alignment comes across as emotional frustration. (<a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-jellyfish-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jellyfish Beach Tool)</a></li> </ol> <p>So let’s walk through these steps with our example.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 1- Notice Misalignment</strong></em></p> <p>You feel the frustration and notice the misalignment. Your heart rate is up your mind may be circling the negative feelings. This is your mental, emotional and biological queue to get your heart and mind to neutral and back in balance.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 2- Get Neutral</strong></em></p> <p>Activate your Mini Meditation – Stop for a moment and close your eyes. With your mind’s eye visualize your life and the situations that you are in as a movie playing out before you. Now take your dominant hand and place it on your heart and press firmly. Take a deep breath in and out and visualize everything in that movie stopping.</p> <p>Your hand on your heart is the pause button to the movie of your life. There is no need to think about any of the details in the movie because it is all on pause, frozen right there in time. Take as much time as you need breathing deeply. Feel your heart rhythm finding it’s way back into coherence. All of your heart’s intelligent language is pumping through your body getting you back into balance.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 3- Scan Heart Intelligence</strong></em></p> <p>Now it is time to use that central intelligence and high-speed intuitive source of wisdom of the heart as we now scan from your heart field. Scan for moments where you felt good, where life felt full. We are scanning for Positive Cellular Memories. This is another great emotional tool. Scan for moments where there was joy moving through you. Scan for moments where your heart felt the thrill of being you. Let every cell of your being bask in those positive feelings as you are fortifying your heart coherence.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 4- Walk the Negative to The Heart</strong></em></p> <p>From this place of balance with your eyes still closed, your life still on pause, scan for the thought or main idea that originally knocked you off kilter. For the example lets use the broad idea of, “I deserve better than this.” Remember you are on pause so just find the thought don’t activate the feeling of the thought or the images associated with it.</p> <p>With your hand still on your heart visualize pulling that thought down to the coherence of your heart field. Take another deep breath and just be there with the thought for a moment.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 5- Heart Intelligence Filter</strong></em></p> <p>Still on pause let that thought be translated by or filtered through your heart intelligence. I like to visualize the negative thought as dark and my heart field as light that washes over it and through it. The original idea, “I deserve better than this.”</p> <p>Washed with your heart’s intelligence and light; “I am deserving. I am capable of having and experiencing more. I want to feel good. I am worth more than this.”</p> <p>Notice that feeling of being fortified. Your coherence starts to nudge out any of the negative. “I want to feel free to be all of me. I am worthy of good and great things. My heart can hold all of those good things. I am worth it… I am worth feeling really good and having good things pour into my life. That is what every cell of me wants and knows I deserve. All of this is true… all of this is my truth and my reality.”</p> <p><em><strong>Step 6- Scan For Next Logical Steps</strong></em></p> <p>We are going to ask and then listen. While still basking in that harmonious energy, ask your heart how you can bring this knowing, and coherence into your life moving forward. What are your next logical steps that align with this truth and feeling? What are the thoughts or strings of thought that you need to carry into your life once you press play on this movie that is your life? Allow your mind to ask your heart for guidance. And then you listen.</p> <p>Now you have created a deep and cellular ownership for what you know to be true. Your mind knows you are deserving and worthy and now you have the feeling to back it up. Along with the feeling you have some next logical steps to create heart-aligned movement forward.</p> <p><em><strong>Step 7- Re-Pattern Thoughts and Focus</strong></em></p> <p>Remember what you think is directly linked to how you feel and what shows up in your life. You will want to take the ideas and stings of thought that came from your heart intelligence and focus on them as much as possible. I am Alicia Hartzell and today we are going to be talking about how to navigate a challenging situation.</p> <p>There are 5 tried and true steps that not only help you get through a challenging situation but can actually make the situation feel like a win. Now that applies to the vast menu of challenging situations you may find yourself navigating. You can easily apply it to the smaller situations like finishing up a project or having that uncomfortable conversation with someone. Maybe you are dealing with bigger situations like: changing the overall direction of your life or career, a divorce or break up, health or financial struggles, or putting your life on pause to help a family member. These five steps will help you tackle these or anything in between. Activating this kind of conscious awareness moves you from a reactive participant to an interaction participant. It gifts you more autonomy and a sense of personal power even within the challenge.</p> <p>When creating an intention it’s important to not only call out what you want, but also how you want to feel. This intention then acts as a filter that can help you stay on track as you navigate the highs and lows of what ever comes your way. Write them out and then check them off as you go. The clearer you are, the better. So don’t push too far out in front of the situation, instead just stay active in a handful of steps or tasks at a time. This will keep you focused and on track.</p> <p>As a bonus each time you check one off your list you will get a little rush of dopamine. Our brains move a mile a minute especially when we are navigating the rocky waters of life. So creating space to check in with yourself helps you make sure you are staying conscious, on task, and moving according to your intention. It also allows you space to make adjustments wherever they might be needed.</p> <p>Make sure you are checking in on your tangible actions as well as your mental and emotional wellbeing. Check in to see how you’re feeling. Not only does it help you feel better while you are navigating the challenge it also helps your brain build a positive bias in the midst of the situation. Doing this amplifies their power in your brain. Scan, Scan, Scan the situation and call out any and everything that even resembles the feeling of a win. These acts of love and kindness will be sustaining to you while navigating your way through the situation.</p> <p>Self-care means you are creating deliberate acts of kindness for yourself. Places where you gift yourself compassion, grace, care and love. Physical, mental or emotional, it creates space where you can come back to yourself, take a breath, and be as you are. Bringing your mind and heart into a state of coherence creates access to your innate intelligence and capabilities. Meaning when you’re in a state of inner alignment everything feels a little bit easier, you think more clearly, and interact with the world for effectively. You have access to your higher-level thinking making even hard situation feel manageable.</p> <p>We all know what it is like to feel stress rising within us. Our heart rhythm becomes disordered, and our mind races too far into the future or gets locked on the past. However, it will give you access your inner alignment where your higher-level thinking and innate intelligence and wisdom are available to help you problem solve your way through it. This is where you find solutions that feel good to you. Without coherence you will survive the experience but, it won’t feel good and you will find your self depleted physically, mentally, and emotionally. I think we can all agree that being in a state of inner alignment and coherence feels better. Mini meditations are a great place to start.</p> <p>So let’s talk about how to get there. There are lots of ways to meditate. Now you can even download an app onto your phone that will guide you. You may already have a meditation practice, which is amazing. But for anyone just starting to get to know your own inner alignment I want to walk you through a simple way to meditate that doesn’t take anything external and doesn’t take very long. If you have not learned this tool yet I highly recommend it.</p> <p>When we look at mental emotional time travel we look at your life as a movie being lived out before you. You are actively in the mode of play as you live the story of your life.</p> <p>Now you are the writer, director, and main character of that story and you can travel back in time rewinding through your past or fast forwarding into your future. Time travel is second nature to us and often we don’t even realize we are doing it. You press the rewind button and you have recalled what you ate yesterday. Wisps of nostalgia may take you farther back to your childhood and that is your brain’s power to press rewind. In the same way you may be planning something in the future, and your brain fast forwards to visualize what is happening down the road.</p> <p>When you meditate you are pressing pause on the movie of your life. All of the information from the movie is still there, every idea and picture from your past or projection into the future is all still there part of the movie. When you press pause you focus on the present moment only. This is you physically pressing the pause button on the movie. Now the mental pause follows. Put your awareness on your heart and breath. Focus on the inhale, the space between, the exhale, and the space between… over and over again. You can even exaggerate the sound of your breath to help you focus. If you brain tries to fast forward or rewind bring awareness to your heart by pressing your hand a bit firmer on your chest. Just keep coming back to your breath.</p> <p>Your biology will respond. Your heart rhythm will balance out and you may find a sense of ease in your body. Even if you just take two minutes to pause you are offering yourself access to a part of your brain that gets locked off when you are out of alignment. Your prefrontal cortex, higher-level thinking, and innate wisdom are found in that state of coherence and alignment. Find a way to sneak it into your day wherever you can. Take a couple extra minutes in the bathroom, do it in bed before your feet even hit the ground, or while your lunch is heating up in the microwave. There is always room to fit it in. I highly recommend that create a practice of it, but you can also just grab it as a tool and do it when you feel the stress creeping in. That’s the perk of building your emotional tool library you always have access to the tools. I want you to keep that in mind as you use journaling as an emotional tool. Negative thoughts and feelings and positive thoughts and feelings are all valuable indicators designed to help you. It’s what you do with that information that really matters the most. Journaling is a great way to pay attention to the indicators and navigate through the information positive or negative.</p> <p>Let’s look at 2 ways to start using Journaling as an Emotional Tool:</p> <ol> <li>Accumulating the positive</li> <li>Processing the negative</li> </ol> <blockquote><p><strong>Accumulating The Positive:</strong></p></blockquote> <p>Journaling to catch positive experiences can be a wonderful way to reinforce and create momentum to thinking and feeling more positively. There are three tools in the Awakening to Your Story Emotional Tool Library that focus on this very practice.</p> <p>We are going to look at all three as prompts to get you writing – journaling. I have added links so that you can watch or read more about each one.</p> <p><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-positive-bias-metacognition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong><em>Creating a Positive Bias</em></strong><strong>:</strong></a> Is all about scanning for what is right and working in your life. Taking pen to paper and writing about where you feel gratitude and appreciation. Think about what sparks joy? Scan for everything you can that feels positive, optimistic, affirming, and good then gift yourself time and space to write it down and revel in how it all feels. The positive is there for you it’s about catching it and claiming it as your own. Scan and write, then keep scanning. When writing about it use all of the flowery language that evokes a deep sense of feelings. I like mixing in photos from the memory to really double down of the positive emotional response. Once you have it captured you can add it to your emotional bank account know as your Positive Cellular Memory Bank. (Don’t worry I give examples of how to find the language that evokes all that positive emotion and feeling) The goal with this prompt is to write about all the things that feel so good that you can feel them down to every cell of your being.</p> <p><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-thought-party/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong><em>Taking a Thought Party Even Deeper</em></strong><strong>:</strong></a> This is all about capturing your daydreams and putting it on paper. A thought party allows you to take the parameter of reality off and play in a world where anything is possible. Gifting yourself space to write about the ideas and feelings that come from a thought party is a wonderful way to journal. The more time you spend thinking, feeling, and writing from this place of possibility the more room you make for it to show up in your life off the pages of your journal. To put it simply make room to daydream and then put the essence of it to paper.</p> <blockquote><p><strong>Processing The Negative:</strong></p></blockquote> <p>Before we get into the how, there are two things to keep in mind when journaling to process negative situations in your life.</p> <p>-First is to understand that negative thoughts and emotions happen in a loop. Some people describe it as a negative spiral. The goal is to use journaling to interrupt that loop. The tendency will be to write out the negative loop and validate the suffering then walk away. Instead try to put in an equal amount of time and words into getting neutral or to the other side of the emotional spectrum. There is value in the amount of time and space you give to breaking the loop. The prompts below will help.</p> <p>Start by writing these 6 prompts out and then work your way through each one.</p> <ul> <li>Get It Out</li> <li>Shift Focus Back To Your Heart</li> <li>Think About Who You Want To Be In This</li> <li>Think About How You Want To Feel In This</li> <li>Scan For Important Information Both Positive and Negative</li> <li>Find Next Logical Steps Forward</li> </ul> <p><strong><em>Get It Out</em></strong> – Get it all off your chest. Write out all of the parts of the situation that are playing in the negative loop. Tell the story as you feel it and as it sits in your mind and heart now. In this type of validating purge of information the tendency will be to focus on “them” the outside source that helped to create the negative situation. And that is just fine. Now it is time to pivot and shift your focus back to your own heart and story. Acknowledge where you have power. Your power is in your own emotional heart and consciousness. You have power in how you live your life and think and feel along they way. The reactive state where your limbic system takes over and you participate from the primal fight, flight or freeze is not the only way forward now. You get to choose who you want to be in the midst of this negative situation or part of your story. If it is something from the past you get to decide who you want to be now, in this present chapter of your story. You are not defined by your situation but rather who you become along the way. Think about it and write it out. The choice is yours.</p> <p><strong><em>Think About How You Want To Feel In This</em></strong><em>– </em>How do I want to feel? Once again you have a choice in the matter. Sometimes you have to know what you don’t want to you can figure out what you do want. So if you need to you can start there. I feel… but I want to feel… Sometimes you have to remove other people’s expectations of how you should feel to make room to discover how you want to feel. Maybe how you once felt kept you safe but it isn’t serving you anymore. It is ok to change your mind and to make room for more freedom in how you want to feel. There is always important information for you woven into any negative situation you may find yourself in, past or present. Things you can learn so you won’t end up in the situation again. Things you discovered about yourself or others that will give you a broader understanding moving forward. Patterns that have emerged that you want to change. Maybe it’s identifying limiting beliefs that are holding you back. Or maybe it is a dream that was sparked in the midst of it all. It can even be as simply as getting clarity about how you want to feel and who you want to be. Call it out and write it down.</p> <p><strong><em>Find The Next Logical Steps Forward </em></strong><em>– </em>What is my next logical step forward? Ask yourself and then scan your heart and mind to see what feels right. It may not come right away but leave room for it on the page. The next step may be as simple as actively shifting your thoughts to support who you want to be and how you want to feel. It might an action you can put into motion. I am Alicia Hartzell and today we are going to be adding A Thought Party to your Emotional Tool Library.</p> <p><strong>An Emotional Thought Party is a set period of time where you allow yourself to consciously daydream about what you want, from a place of infinite possibility. </strong></p> <p>Here is the deal; you are actually co-creating the life you are living. One thought and feeling at a time you are building the path that becomes your life. When we look at all the different emotional tools that I’m teaching you, they are there to help you become a more active and awake participant in your life. They are there to help you feel better and more connected to the innate power you have as the write, director and main character of your story. If you are feeling held back, stuck, tangled up in thoughts that are limiting you or making you feel small then this is a great tool to reach for. If you want to create movement to your dream, get tapped back into what is possible, or reestablish some enthusiasm in your story this is one of the emotional tools that can help you get there.</p> <p><strong>Things That Trip Us Up:</strong> As we think about the things that we want we can get tripped up because we don’t know how to make it happen. Often we don’t know what the next step should be. The reality of what is right now keeps us from what could be down the road. We don’t know how to fill in the gaps from where we are, to where we want to be. This is why an Emotional Thought Party is so valuable it helps fill in those gaps.</p> <p><strong>How To Throw An Emotional Thought Party:</strong> First is to press pause on the confines of reality so that you can play in the ripples of what’s imaginable. That means leaving all the limiting thoughts on the sidelines. You are not worried about if it could really happen or if it feels far fetched. And while you are thinking about it, you allow yourself to feel as if it is happening in that moment. Give yourself permission to be fully in the Thought Party. The more you think about it and feel it from this place, the more you get used to it. This allows those thoughts and feelings to become second nature to you.</p> <p>The goal is that when you think about what you want, rather then it sending you on a path of thinking that is negative linked to all the ideas of impossibility, instead it sends you on a path linked to that thought party. That path of thinking feels positive and leaves room for it to be possible. Even if you don’t yet know the next step you absolutely know the feeling of it happening. <a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-jellyfish-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">You may notice that this sounds a lot like the Jelly Fish Beach Emotional Tool. That’s because it is! Understanding your paths of thinking is so important! You are using metacognition to bring awareness to your thoughts and then you are activating your neuroplasticity to rewire those thoughts to come from a place of possibility! When you activate neuroplasticity, it helps you create these new pathways of thinking. The more time you spend in your thought party, consciously thinking about what you want from this positive place of possibility, allowing yourself to really feel it happening, you are rewiring your brain to think about it from that experience. This is huge and helps determine how you feel in those gaps between wanting and having.</p> <p>I suggest setting a timer, especially in the beginning. Start small one or two minutes at a time. One minute is a long time when you are rewiring your thoughts. So start at a minute and then build from there. It is a tool and a practice that might take a little effort at first. Big things, small things, actual physical things, situational things, and emotional things, all co-created from a place of possibility. I still have lots of things on the fringe of reality not yet created in my life but I have thought parties about all of them. And when they start to feel impossible I check in with myself to see if it is something I still want. If it is, then I know I need double down on myself and have a thought party about it.</p> <p>In the video I set a timer and walk you through a one minute Emotional Thought Party. We are going to talk about how to create and communicate emotional boundaries. And if you have ever had your boundaries trampled by someone, we are going to be talking about what most often goes wrong in those situations.</p> <p>As a side note: While the principles we are going to look at are the same, if you are a parent or loved one creating a boundary for a child it is a little bit different. This is because as a parent you are creating boundaries for yourself but you are also using your parental authority to create boundaries for them.</p> <p><strong>Creating An Emotional Boundary:</strong></p> <p>An emotional boundary is an action you are going to take so that you can stay in a place of inner wellbeing or inner alignment. That is right, a boundary is actually an action. Creating a healthy boundary start by understanding who you want to be and how you want to feel. The focus is on your heart and story. Once you know that, you can then create actions that will help you stay in that place. Those actions actively create the boundary to protect that state of inner wellbeing or alignment.</p> <p>There are two typical missteps that happen when creating a boundary. This may ruffle a few feathers but stick with me. Requesting that a person do something so that you can feel any particular way leaves them with the power over how you feel. The langue that says, “do this so that I feel a particular way” is co-dependent and is not a boundary it is a request that is focused on the other person. A true healthy boundary requires no action from the other person.</p> <p>The second happens when we create what we think is a boundary but it is really just a statement that is designed to validate of someone wrongness. This is a language that might say, “You can’t treat me that way because you are the one who is out of line and wrong here.” Focusing on how wrong someone is, as it relates to you, doesn’t create a boundary. Asking them to change doesn’t create a boundary. Both are focused on them and not on your own heart.</p> <p>So to review: A healthy boundary starts with your own heart, knowing who you want to be and how you want to feel in a place of inner alignment for your own wellbeing. And is then created by knowing what actions you will take to protect and maintain that state of wellbeing and alignment.</p> <p><strong>Communicating An Emotional Boundary:</strong></p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-13256" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-300x300.jpg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-150x150.jpg 150w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-768x768.jpg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-600x600.jpg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story-100x100.jpg 100w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i3-awakeing-to-your-story.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />Communicating what you will do in response to another person’s actions is a beautiful way to use your voice and allows the person to see your boundary. It also creates an opportunity for the situation to shift in a way that feels better for you. It may even shift the situation to feel better for the other person as well. Communicating your boundary allows the other person to decide what their action will be in response to your boundary. You have zero control over their response. Remember your boundary isn’t about them it is about the action you will take to stay in a place of wellbeing. I want you to remember that in opening up a dialog about your boundary you are creating room for the situation to change not your boundary.</p> <p>Another thing to keep in mind when communicating your boundary is the other person’s emotional capacity. If you know the other person doesn’t have the emotional capacity to see or respect your boundary, you get to decide if you even want to communicate the boundary with them. That’s right you get to choose. Remember your boundary is for you not them. You have the right to take that action to keep yourself in a state of wellbeing whether you tell them about it or not. You do not have to share your boundary, you just have to be ready to take the action required to protect your inner alignment and wellbeing.</p> <p>Let’s walk through a couple personal examples.</p> <p><em><strong>A Communicated Boundary:</strong></em></p> <p>I have a person in my life who was going through a tough transition and who was leaning on me for emotional support. It got to the point where the friendship become very one sided and the conversations about the suffering were endless and repetitive. They kept asking for my help but weren’t really listening or taking the help that was being offered. It was draining me and I felt taken advantage of so I knew I needed to create a boundary for myself.<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-13258 alignright" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-300x300.jpg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-150x150.jpg 150w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-768x768.jpg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-600x600.jpg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story-100x100.jpg 100w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/e8s8i5-awakeing-to-your-story.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p> <p>My boundary started with me knowing who I wanted to be and how I wanted to feel. I wanted to be a supportive person in their life. I didn’t like feeling taken advantage of so I decided I wanted to feel grounded and remain feeling positive when I talk with them. The action I will take to keep that inner state of alignment for myself is to exit the conversation when they ask me to take on the role of helper. The boundary is exiting the conversation when I am being taken advantage of in conversations that doesn’t feel reciprocal.</p> <p>I knew this person had a broad enough capacity of heart to have a conversation about it. So we did and it helped both of us feel better supported in the friendship. In that dialog they asked if they could pay for my time to help them create a more solid path forward. They were paying money to have that dialog so they became more invested in listening and using that time to help them create action to make their situation better. My boundary helped them double down on themselves. And when our regular friendship conversation starts to pull in that direction I will just mention to them that if they want to talk about that it is better talked about in a session. It is up to me to hold that boundary by take the action needed to stay in my own alignment and wellbeing.</p> <p><em><strong>A Non-Communicated Boundary:</strong></em></p> <p>I have someone in my life that isn’t going anywhere but has a history of one-upping, comparing, and gas lighting me as a way of self-preservation. This person doesn’t have the emotional capacity to respect a boundary without activating one of those acts of self-preservation. Opening up a dialog about it is not going to help me build a better relationship with them or stay true to the boundary. I want to be someone who can love this person unconditionally and see what is emotionally mine and what isn’t. I want to feel safe and like the full expression of myself. The actions I will take to keep that inner state of alignment include, gently ending a conversation when their actions or words start to make me feel diminished, changing or pivoting the conversation when their self-preservation starts to trigger any kind of old damaging feelings and, not sharing things that are too close to my heart.</p> <p>The boundary asks nothing of them but allows me to feel good when in relationship with them. It keeps me in a place where I get to be in a state of wellbeing no matter what may be going on with them.</p> <p>Remember you have the power to create a boundary and hold a boundary whether you tell the other person or not. It’s original name is Negative Bias and it can be a real Jack-wagon.</p> <p>Outwardly negative bias is a cognitive function designed to keep you “safe” from predators like lions and tigers and bears, oh my! It scans for everything that is wrong or might go wrong to help you see all the negative things that might lead to getting eaten by said lions, and tigers, and bears. Or in today’s environment to keep you from getting hit by a car or taken advantage of on the street.</p> <p>When left on autopilot without your conscious awareness to keep it in check, it can end up holding you back and tangled up in everything that is negative. Inwardly it can tear you down, shut you up, and keep you small faster then any outside source ever could. Keeping you small and shut down might keep you “safe” but it also keeps you paralyzed and unable to be a full expression of yourself. We talked about this last week but it is important to mention it again. If someone’s words or actions are triggering negative thoughts and feelings you absolutely have to the power to stop them. No matter what is causing your inner narrator to bully you it is up to you to change the game. Let me say that again. No matter what is causing your inner narrator to bully you only you have the power to change the conversation.</p> <p>So let’s talk about the how to stop the self-bullying narrator from tearing your down.</p> <p>Let’s do it in 4 tangible steps: I have added in some practice thoughts as we go through each step.</p> <ul> <li><strong>Step 1: CATCH IT</strong></li> </ul> <p>Take yourself off of autopilot and really watch your thoughts and pay attention to how you are feeling. Don’t just blindly believe the thoughts that you are having. Instead if a thought doesn’t feel good notice it. Was it yours or someone else’s that you adopted? <em>“I know where you came from and I call BS.”</em> You have the power to say no to the thought! <em>“I see you and I say no, you are trying to keep me small and that is not who I want to be or how I want to feel today.”</em></p> <ul> <li><strong>Step 3: SHIFT IT</strong></li> </ul> <p>Metacognition allows you to see your thoughts and neuroplasticity allows you to create a new path of thinking. This means you have the power to choose a thought that feels better. Shift from a negative path of thinking to a more positive one, one thought and feeling at a time. <em>“Hey I activate the power to shift gears here. I would rather stand in my power and feel more expansive.”</em> Maybe you put your hand on heart and take some deep breaths and them choose the next thought that feels better.<em> “In this moment I am safe and sound and I have this.”</em></p> <ul> <li><strong>Step 4: DOUBLE DOWN ON YOURSELF</strong></li> </ul> <p>It is always a good idea to double down on your own heart and story. Emotional tools and putting yourself in the way of things that help you think and feel from a more positive place are a perfect way to double down on yourself.</p> <p>You will notice that Awaking to Your Story Emotional Tools weave themselves together to create a net to catch you when you are free-falling through negative thoughts and experiences. You are probably no stranger to someone picking you apart, having the most insecure parts of yourself highlighted by someone else just to prove just how “less than” you are, or the sensation of wanting to shrink away into nothingness banished by someone else’s determination of you. Much like you I am no stranger to any of that, but I am here to help you get to the other side and help you learn how to take back the inner power that belongs to only you.</p> <p>First of all it’s important to see that when you are being bullied you have 2 options. That’s right you have 2 distinct paths available to you. Once you clearly see both paths you then have the power to choose which one you take. Let’s look at both closely.</p> <p><strong>Path 1: Let’s call it Bully Boulevard</strong></p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-13185 alignright" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-300x300.jpg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-150x150.jpg 150w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-768x768.jpg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-600x600.jpg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1-100x100.jpg 100w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i1.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />This is where you follow the bully’s idea of who you are:</p> <ul> <li>You let it sneak into your thinking and with every insecurity that they point out; a little bit more of your light gets dimmed until your own inner voice becomes dark and bleak.</li> <li>This path is designed to feel negative, reductive, and to cause you harm.</li> <li>Being on this path makes the bully your point of reference and allows them to become the writer, director and main character of your story.</li> <li>Your Negative Bias makes this the easiest path to choose because it keeps you unconsciously scanning what is wrong. <a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-positive-bias-metacognition/">(Negative Bias is a left over primal way of keeping the lions from eating you in the wild. You can learn more about that here)</a> So when the bully point out the negative things you have already scanned about yourself according to your own negative bias, it is easy for you to believe it as if it were gospel.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Path 2: This is the road less traveled; let’s call it Self-Love Lane</strong></p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-13186" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-300x300.jpg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-150x150.jpg 150w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-768x768.jpg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-600x600.jpg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2-100x100.jpg 100w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/01/awakeing-to-your-story-s8e6i2.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />This is the path less traveled because it means taking yourself off of autopilot and becoming an active participant in how your life gets played out.</p> <ul> <li>You double down on yourself on this path of thinking so that you can stand stronger in your own personal power.</li> <li>This path is designed to feel positive, more expansive and is designed to help you create ownership for who you really are.</li> <li>Walking down Self-Love Lane makes your own heart your point of reference and allows you to be the writer, director and main character of your story. This is the way your life was designed to be lived.</li> </ul> <p>Now you get to make a conscience choice which path you want to take Bully Blvd. or Self-Love Ln. My hope is that you will choose Self-Love Lane but I know to do that you will probably need some tools, a broader perspective and someone to cheer you on and have your back. So let’s look at all three.</p> <p><em><strong>TOOLS:</strong></em></p> <ul> <li><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-point-of-reference/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Point of Reference</strong></a> – Making sure your point of reference is on your own emotional heart and story is powerful because it allows you to determine how you feel. This tool will help you make sure your POR is not on something you have zero control over like the bully. Because you absolutely don’t want them determining how you feel.</li> <li><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-inner-voice/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Inner Voice</strong> </a>– You want to make sure the narrator of your story is you not the bully and this tool will help you double down on the power of owning your own voice.</li> <li><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/emotional-tools-positive-bias-metacognition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Positive Bias</strong></a> – Understanding how your brain works is everything when learning to protect it from a bully. This tool will help you take yourself off of autopilot and become an active participant in what you think and how you feel.</li> <li><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-jellyfish-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Jellyfish Beach</strong></a> – As you become an active participant in what you think and how you feel this tool and analogy will make choosing the positive thought over the negative ones much easier.</li> <li><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-stream-kayak/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Stream Kayak Principle</strong> </a>– This tool is a bit more advanced and will help you understand where you are in relationship to the world around you. It can also help you create a visual for what is happening when a bully chooses to bully you.</li> </ul> <p>All of these Emotional Tools are designed to help you stay the main character, writer, and director of your own story, making sure that the bully doesn’t have access to your brain and emotional heart.</p> <p>Spend as much time or more studying these emotional tools then you do recounting anything involving the bully. Your thoughts determine how you feel and you have the power to choose your thoughts! This perspective can help you literally rise above this situation and see yourself and the other person like player on a game board. You can see why they are making the moves that they are but you also have the power to not play their game.</p> <p>Tearing someone down to build yourself up is one of the oldest games in the books. But I want you to know that it is only played by the weakest of people. The Stream Kayak Principle can help you understand that someone who is emotionally downing on the river of life will choose to try to hold your head under the water so that they can gasp for air. They knock you out of your boat in an attempt to survive themselves.</p> <p>A person’s environment, other people, external circumstances can all contribute to the weakening of a person’s emotional state. It can be a learned behavior or one that is created out of shear desperation and self-preservation. A bully may want to direct your story because something has gone wrong in their story. Lack of control or power in their story may lead to them trying to take it over in your story. It is possible that they learned the behavior because they were bullied and they are just continuing a game that was push onto them. You never have to let their weakness become your own. These positive memories transport you into a momentary space that feels good. You may find the corners of your mouth turning upwards in a smile as an involuntary physical response to recalling this positive moment in time. Your heart may feel tickled, enlightened, cozy, or comforted as you replay the memory like a move in your minds eye. You get the idea, every cell of your being responds in a positive way to this captured moment in time.</p> <p><strong>Why Positive Cellular Memories are important:</strong></p> <p>First they can get you out of an emotional pickle. Meaning if you find yourself in a challenging emotional state PCMs can help you shift out of that state into a place that feels better. They can help you transition from the Jellyfish Beach path of thinking to the Piña Colada Beach path of thinking. These positive and power packed memories can help you pull thoughts from your solution oriented prefrontal cortex rather then your fight, flight, or freeze amygdala.</p> <p><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-jellyfish-beach/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-12659 size-full" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/awakening-to-your-story-episode-web.jpg" alt="" width="75" height="75" /></a>The Jellyfish Beach vs. Pina Colada Beach analogy is an emotional tool on its own that helps you visualize the difference between your prefrontal cortex and amygdala so I am linking that <a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-jellyfish-beach/">Video and Blog</a> so that you can tap into that tool. But utilizing a PCM actively helps slows the negative momentum down and makes room for your brain to transitions to a place that feels better.</p> <p><a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-positive-bias-metacognition/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignleft wp-image-12659 size-full" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/03/awakening-to-your-story-episode-web.jpg" alt="" width="75" height="75" /></a>Positive Cellular Memories also can help you fortify your positive bias. Again this is also a big topic and tool on it’s own so I am linking that <a href="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/tv/emotional-tool-positive-bias-metacognition/">Video and Blog</a> so that you can learn more about that emotional tool.</p> <p>Allowing your brain to run on autopilot means you are living according to a negative bias that is designed to keep you safe and small in the wilds of humanity. Becoming an active participant in choosing your thoughts means living in a state of consciousness. Your brain is always scanning and that scanning leads to your internal dialog and external actions. Just imagine if you took the power back and created a bias where you were scanning for all the things that felt good and that scanning lead to a positive internal dialog and external actions. You have that kind of power and PCM’s can help you get there.</p> <p><strong>How to build Positive Cellular Memory Bank or Library:</strong></p> <p>When creating your PCM library or bank you want to do it in a way that will really hit home. So I recommend creating a physical book that you can hold in your hand with photographs and a written description of the memory. When you hold the page open looking at the photograph and reading about the memory your brain will transport you to that positive moment in time.</p> <p>When you write about it, double down and get into all of the positive feeling words of the moment. The reason you want to take the time to do this is because when you are up against a negative thought you want to be referencing something that feels stronger then that negative thought.</p> <p>Let me give you an example:</p> <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-13154 alignleft" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-300x199.jpeg" alt="" width="300" height="199" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-300x199.jpeg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-1024x680.jpeg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-768x510.jpeg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-1536x1020.jpeg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory-600x399.jpeg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/positive-cellular-memory.jpeg 1608w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />This photograph and moment in time immediately transports me to a place of joy and so it is absolutely a positive cellular memory.</p> <p>A first run description of this memory might go something like this: <em>What a great day on the lake! Having fun with friends playing around like kids. Listening to music, laughing, basking in the sunshine, and being on the water makes life feel full. For all of this I am grateful.</em></p> <p>Pretty good pass right? But will it standup to a negative thought? The answer is maybe. I want a freak yes it will stand up to the negative thought, not just a maybe.</p> <p>So let’s try again doubling down and really mining all that feels good: <em>What a freaking fantastic day on the lake. First of all I love these people and this moment for all the freedom and playfulness that we all created together. Being on the water, listening to music and laughing together it was all like glitter in the sunshine! Which the water actually looked like in person and in all of the photos! I wanted to jump in to the ice-cold mountain water and so we stopped the boat and I talked my Virgo sister into doing the plunge with me! Laughing hysterically we grabbed each other’s hands and just jumped. The ice-cold water felt like a million tickles on my skin and as my face broke through the freeing cold water to the warm sunshine I was still laughing with endless joy! Our laughter was so contagious that before we knew it another and another and another person was jumping in to join us. I was cold, ecstatic, and my heart was completely full. Boundless joy can be seen on my face and felt in every cell of my being. For all of this I am so freaking grateful!</em></p> <p>Now that’s a freak yes, that can stand up to a negative thought.</p> <p>So I recommend taking the time to double down and mine the moment for all that feels good. It’s great to catch the Positive Cellular Memories as they happen, call them out and add a photo of that moment to a photo album on your phone. Then write about it right after. But going back and scanning for them and picking them out of your past is perfect too! Just keep building your library or bank.</p> <p>You can also create a voice note to describe the brilliance of the moment so that you don’t forget. You just want to make sure that you go deep enough into the brilliance of the moment so that it evokes that positive cellular response when you listen to it, read it, or see it.</p> <p><strong><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-13163 alignright" src="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-300x300.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-300x300.jpg 300w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-150x150.jpg 150w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-768x768.jpg 768w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-600x600.jpg 600w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3-100x100.jpg 100w, http://awakeningtoyourstory.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/09/season-8-e5-image-3.jpg 2048w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />How to use Positive Cellular Memory:</strong></p> <p>There are lots of ways to use your positive cellular memories but today we are going to look the three that deal with creating a transition form a place that doesn’t feel good to one that feels better.</p> <p>First is to calm you down from a heightened negative experience. When you feel yourself worked up and your blood pressure is on the rise pull out a Positive Cellular Memory to help calm your nervous system down. Take a few rounds of square breathing, inhaling for four counts, holding for four counts, exhaling for four counts, and then holding for four counts. As you pace your breathing look at one of those photos. Then read that description once or twice. Closing your eyes, let yourself be transported there allowing your cellular structure to go along for the ride. This breaks the cycle of the negative experience. You are taken out of your amygdala and ushered into your prefrontal cortex and from there you get to make a more conscious and solution oriented decision of what you want to do next.</p> <p>Second is to get you into positive mindset. When you know you are about to do something that might feel nerve-racking or challenging pulling out a Positive Cellular Memory is a great way to get you into a positive and more powerful mindset. Any stress or anxiety is squashed into a more manageable place. Thoughts about the upcoming event or action can be pulled from that solution oriented prefrontal cortex rather then that fight, flight or freeze place of fear of your amygdala.</p> <p>And lastly is to help you get neutral, then transition to a better path of thinking. When you are consciously watching your thoughts and working on transition from the Jellyfish beach path of thinking (pulling thoughts from your amygdala) to the Pina Colada beach path of thinking (pulling thoughts from your prefrontal cortex), it can be really hard to go from that negative path of thinking to a positive one. And that’s when your PCMs really come in handy.</p> <p>If you find yourself on the Jellyfish beach pulling thoughts from a place of fight, fight, or freeze that’s when you take a time out or “time into your heart” and use your PCM to help you slow that negative momentum down and get you to a neutral place. You might even find that you can more easily scan for what is right and working in the actual moment from this post PCM place. From there you can actively reach for one thought that feels better, and then another and before you know it you are actively in your prefrontal cortex, in a state of higher level thinking, allowing yourself to feel so much better!</p> <p>Now go out and start building up your Positive Cellular Memory bank.
